IMSA/FOA Fiber Optic CertificationsThe International Municipal Signalling Association (IMSA) and the FOA have partnered to offer fiber optic certifications. IMSA offers the FOA CFOT® Certified Fiber Optic Technician Certification and the CFOS/D Specialist in Fiber Optic Network Design. Classes are conducted at IMSA meetings and sections.IMSA/FOA Certified Fiber Optic Technician Description: The IMSA/FOA Certified Fiber Optic Technician for ITS, traffic signal and communication systems is primarily aimed at installers who need the basic knowledge, skills and abilities to install fiber optic outside plant networks properly. The CFOT is a 3-day hands-on training program that takes the student through the basic terminology and theory of how fiber optics systems work through the splicing and testing of fiber optic systems. Target Audience: Those who install fiber optic outside plant networks. Network owners, IT personnel, facilities managers, network designers, estimators and technicians involved in the design, installation and inspection of fiber networks may be interested. Prerequisites: IMSA online self-study fiber optic course; some experience in the field of fiber optics and communications recommended. Hours: 24 IMSA/FOA Certified Fiber Optic Specialist/Design Description: This fiber optic specialist certification is for technicians involved in the planning, design and management of fiber networks. The certification covers the theory and industry bestpractices for fiber optic network design and testingof today’s complex transportation and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The certification is recommended for network administrators, designers, project managers, inspectors and installers. Topics covered include introduction to fiber optic network design; overview of fiber optic installations, both outside plant and premises; planning a fiber optic network; choosing components; design review (component compatibilities, power budget, environmental requirements, etc.); testing and documentation and estimating. Target Audience: Those involved in the planning, design and management of installation of fiber networks. Prerequisites: Two years of field experience with fiber optics networks, including documented experience designing fiber optic networks. CFOT Certification is highly recommended.
