COMMUNICATIONS ESTIMATING

F. DOUGLAS ELLIOTT. Past President, FOA

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

A small steel making complex. At first glance it looks much like any campus environment, although it is not spread over a very large geographical area. Each facet of the steel making process is to be monitored, and the data routed back to a central processing centre. Similarly all power systems throughout the plant are monitored and the data is routed back to the maintenance & engineering services and then onto the central processing centre. There are accounting, purchasing, shipping, safety and general services departments, all of which must be coupled into a central processing system. Fibre is the media of choice for all processing and power monitoring due to its EMI immunity, capacity, and physical size. Some Cat.5 cable will be used for TC to Desk Top in the main office.

"A" type cable -6 fiber, 62.5/125 _m OFNR breakout cable will be used in all distribution outside of the main office building. It will be installed in existing conduits that must be fished and swabbed.

"B" type cable - 2 fiber, 62.5/125 _m OFNR duplex cable will be used from a central TC to the desk only in certain cases.

"C" type cable - 6 fiber, 62.5/125 _m OFNR distribution cable will be used for distribution within the main office building.

Cat 5, will be used from the each TC to the desk in all locations where fibre is not used.

All cable lengths shown on the drawing sheet are in meters.

All fibres will be terminated with ST, two part epoxy compatible connectors.

A fibre optic concentrator will be located at each TC but, it will be supplied by others.

Using the labour units and material costs provided, we shall now calculate the cost of the fibre installation only.
