FOA Holding FTTx Summit In
LA On Thursday, January 18, 2007
FTTx (fiber to the premises/home/curb)
has become a big market for contractors and installers in Southern
California. New subdivisions are being fibered, towns are creating
municipal fiber networks that include FTTx and older established
neighborhoods are being rebuilt for FTTx. All this is creating
an enormous need for trained and certified workers. The FOA has
been asked for help from all sides, so we have recruited help
from a diverse group of interested people.
The FOA will be holding a FTTx summit at the campus of LA Trade
Technical College in LA on Thursday, January 18, 2007 at 6:30
to 9 PM. There will be presentations on FTTx Technology, telco
and municipal plans, job opportunities and requirements, training
options and other services. We're inviting all contractors and
installers, instructors and students at FOA-Approved schools
and other interested parties to attend. Seating is limited,
so registration is required.
There is no cost to attend. The meeting is sponsored by The FOA
and hosted by LA Trade Technical College, with Bob Landeen at
LA Trade/Tech kindly making arrangements.
If you and your students are interested, fax back the form on
the FOA website at www.thefoa.org/fttxreg.pdf.
As soon as final details such as room locations and parking for
the meeting are available, registered participants will be informed.
Time & Place: January
18, 2007, 6:30 PM, LA Trade Technical College
The FOA has created a special
FTTx links page with lots of
links to news, market reports, technical articles and vendor
technical and product information. Here
is a great place to start learning more about FTTx.

Industry standards for connector
We get some interesting questions
at the FOA and often learn from answering them. Some are relevant
to many users, so we try to use them as topics for our "Tech
Topics" or include them in the newsletter. Here is a recent
answer to a query on visual inspection of connectors.
Visual inspection has more opinions
than most anything in fiber! As for magnification, anything from
30-400X has been advocated, with 100-200X being the norm.400X
may be too much and SM should be inspected by an interferometer
TIA standards include FOTP-13 for visual inspection and there
is an international (IEC) standard in process. I'm sure there
are a number of military standards, but we can't find a particular
reference for visual inspection. Mil-STD-2042B is a generic cabling

and singlemode cables with different connectors on ends. The
short patch cord enables testing of two different connectors,
as indicated on the inside of the cover. The model shown enables
testing of two different fiber types and two different connector
styles with an OTDR having either of two connector styles. External
cables are rugged 3 mm. Holes in cover enable use without pinching
of cables. Handle enables convenient moving to testing site.
Case dimensions are 11.625 x 4.625 x 8.
Lengths of exposed cables are
approximately 10 feet. Lengths of fibers are limited by internal

New Professional Society
for Structured Cabling Recognizes Importance of Fiber Optics
The new Structured Cabling Association,
is a professional society aimed at installers of "structured
cabling" or premises cabling. Structured cabling has been
focused on so-called "Cat 5" or UTP cabling for years,
while network speeds have left UTP behind. Now most backbones
for LANs are fiber optics and every network seems to have wireless.
The SCA, founded in part by FOA activists Tom Collins and Jim
Hayes, intends to make structured cabling training and certification
more relevant to today's world.

FOA CFOT Renewals Get Free
Copy of NECA/FOA Installation Standard
Every CFOT renewal will now
receive a free copy of NECA 301-2004,
Installing And Testing Fiber Optic Cables, produced by
The FOA in cooperation with NECA (The National Electrical Contractors
Association). This is an important reference document for defining
the installation and testing of fiber optic cable plants in a
"neat and workmanlike manner."
The FOA feels this is such an
important document that we are giving a free copy (normally priced
at $15) to every active CFOT when they renew their active status.
The FOA has also sent free copies
to all FOA-Approved schools. The new FOA CFOT exam to be used
after August, 2005, will include questions from the standard.
Schools should be including information from the standard in
their classes already.

New PowerPoint Presentation
Introduces Fiber Optics - in English or Spanish!
The FOA has created a short
PowerPoint presentation that introduces you to fiber optics and
talks about job opportunities in the field. It was intended for

introduction for anyone. It's about 3 meg file so it takes a

FOA Certification Top Choice
The FOA CFOT and CFOS programs continue to gain momentum in fiber
optics. Over 20,000 CFOTs have been certified by over 160 schools
as the FOA enters its 12th year. Since our founding in July,
1995, we have dedicated ourselves to promoting fiber optics and
professionalism in fiber optics personnel, focusing on education
and certification. We are continuing to add new schools and more
CFOTs as users of fiber optics learn that a CFOT is the indication
of a professional, well-trained fiber optic technician. Now with
FTTH (fiber to the home) finally taking off, demand for CFOTs
is rising and schools are responding by expanding programs rapidly.
The FOA now has approved programs
at 160+ organizations, welcoming new additions like the Joint
Apprenticeship and Training Committee of the International Brotherhood
of Electrical Workers, Corning
Cable Systems and AFL
for their installation training programs and NASA's Goldstone
Tracking Station. The complete list of FOA-Approved schools is

refer to yourself as "Your Name, CFOT" or "Your

Feel free to use the logo and
designations to promote your achievements and professionalism!
