Annual market forecasts
released at the New Year are often wildly optimistic and usually
dry, boring reading - but not this one!

Ten Telecom Forecasts for
the New Year
Dr. Paul Polishuk, President
of Information Gatekeepers, today announced the availability
of IGI's forecasts for 2007. "Our main product here at IGI
is forecasting the telecommunications industry, and using briefings,
reports, seminars, and other communications tools to disseminate
these forecasts and their consequences to our clients. At this
time of year we have an opportunity to present a special form
for communicating some of these forecasts. Every year our Lightwave
author, Clif Holliday, prepares his view of the most significant
events likely to underpin telecommunications for the coming year.
While Clif likes to take a somewhat lighthearted approach to
this forecast (its title is "Holliday's Holiday Horoscope,")
his accuracy has been exceptional! What do you call an athlete
who consistently hits over 750? At IGI we call him one of our
analysts and writers Clif Holliday. Last year (2006) his
forecasts earned a 77.5% grade. He is one of the few New Year's
prognosticators, who always precedes his new forecast with a
review of the accuracy of last year's forecast. This gives the
reader a sense of how much creditability (or lack thereof) to
put in the forecasts for the coming year."
Dr. Polishuk continued, "This
year we are posting the results of the 2006 forecasts with Mr.
Holliday's grading (he gives himself a 77.5%, only slightly below
last year's 85%) and are offering you the opportunity to grade
them yourself. We are also offering you a similar opportunity
to comment on the 2006 forecasts. We will be publishing the more
Dr. Polishuk concludes, "We
hope that our clients and readers find these forecasts as much
fun as we have in putting them together and publishing them.
Considering the consistent accuracy of above 70%, they may be
more than just a pleasant diversion.
Wednesday's earthquake (12/27/06, ed) and aftershocks jolted
Asia for hours but the telecommunication disruptions may reverberate
for weeks. When transpacific fiber optic cables were damaged,
Internet and phone call volume plummeted by half and Web browsing
slowed to a crawl.
According to the Pacific Telecommunications
Council (PTC), the disaster highlights the vulnerability of international
telecommunications in a global economy that has grown dependent
on real-time communications.
It also raises the stakes for
US$500 million in planned investments in new transpacific undersea
"Natural disasters can expose
weaknesses in global communications," said Ken Zita, who
served as a telecommunications advisor to the U.S. Government
following the Asian tsunami. Zita, conference chairman of PTC'07:
Beyond Telecom, will host telecommunications executives from
over 60 countries at PTC'07 next month where emergency communications
and disaster management will be highlighted.
"Despite the latest network
management technologies, traffic concentration remain susceptible
to strong natural hazards."
David Lassner, President and
Chairman of the Board of Governors for PTC and CIO at the University
of Hawaii, added that global telecommunications cannot be underestimated.
"Everything from billions
of dollars in international trade to personal communication with
family is silently carried by our industry When we go dead, the
world goes dead."
(The problem with damage
to the undersea cables appears to be no different from cables
that would lay on the ground on the surface - earthquakes cause
landslides and dump rubble on the cables, causing damage. ed)
World's Fastest Optical Chip
Telecom start-up Infinera
packs dozens of optical components onto photonic integrated circuits
for ultrafast optical networks - as fast as 400 Gb/s. That's
no small feat, when you consider they integrate optics and electronics,
as many as 40 each of lasers, detectors, modulators on one device.
Devices like this facilitate the devleopment of faster, denser

The FOA has created a special

Industry standards for connector
We get some interesting questions
at the FOA and often learn from answering them. Some are relevant
to many users, so we try to use them as topics for our "Tech
Topics" or include them in the newsletter. Here is a recent
answer to a query on visual inspection of connectors.
Visual inspection has more opinions
than most anything in fiber! As for magnification, anything from
30-400X has been advocated, with 100-200X being the norm.400X
may be too much and SM should be inspected by an interferometer
TIA standards include FOTP-13 for visual inspection and there
is an international (IEC) standard in process. I'm sure there
are a number of military standards, but we can't find a particular
reference for visual inspection. Mil-STD-2042B is a generic cabling

New Professional Society
for Structured Cabling Recognizes Importance of Fiber Optics
The new Structured Cabling Association,
is a professional society aimed at installers of "structured
cabling" or premises cabling. Structured cabling has been
focused on so-called "Cat 5" or UTP cabling for years,
while network speeds have left UTP behind. Now most backbones
for LANs are fiber optics and every network seems to have wireless.
The SCA, founded in part by FOA activists Tom Collins and Jim
Hayes, intends to make structured cabling training and certification
more relevant to today's world.

FOA CFOT Renewals Get Free
Copy of NECA/FOA Installation Standard
Every CFOT renewal will now
receive a free copy of NECA 301-2004,
Installing And Testing Fiber Optic Cables, produced by
The FOA in cooperation with NECA (The National Electrical Contractors
Association). This is an important reference document for defining
the installation and testing of fiber optic cable plants in a
"neat and workmanlike manner."
The FOA feels this is such an
important document that we are giving a free copy (normally priced
at $15) to every active CFOT when they renew their active status.
The FOA has also sent free copies
to all FOA-Approved schools. The new FOA CFOT exam to be used
after August, 2005, will include questions from the standard.
Schools should be including information from the standard in
their classes already.

The FOA has created a short

FOA Certification Top Choice
The FOA CFOT and CFOS programs continue to gain momentum in fiber
optics. Over 20,000 CFOTs have been certified by over 160 schools
as the FOA enters its 12th year. Since our founding in July,
1995, we have dedicated ourselves to promoting fiber optics and
professionalism in fiber optics personnel, focusing on education
and certification. We are continuing to add new schools and more
CFOTs as users of fiber optics learn that a CFOT is the indication
of a professional, well-trained fiber optic technician. Now with
FTTH (fiber to the home) finally taking off, demand for CFOTs
is rising and schools are responding by expanding programs rapidly.
The FOA now has approved programs
at 160+ organizations, welcoming new additions like the Joint
Apprenticeship and Training Committee of the International Brotherhood
of Electrical Workers, Corning
Cable Systems and AFL
for their installation training programs and NASA's Goldstone
Tracking Station. The complete list of FOA-Approved schools is
